The AN/PVS-27 Magnum Universal Night Sight (MUNS) PINNACLE® is a high-resolution clip-on night vision weapon sight that mounts on any MIL-STD-1913 rail interface forward of an existing scope, adding night vision capabilities to daytime target acquisition platforms.

The Magnum Universal Night Sight (MUNS) utilizes a full MIL-SPEC Generation 3 (Auto-gated PINNACLE®) image intensifier tube, an extremely fast f/1.0 catadioptric lens for a brighter and sharper image in starlight, and patented permanent boresight alignment technology. The MUNS gathers twice as much light as the AN/PVS-22 Universal Night Sight (UNS) PINNACLE® and can be used against targets at 1.5 times the range of the AN/PVS-22.

The unit is installed, operated, and removed without tools and without affecting boresight (permanent boresight alignment). The unit can be mounted on a spotting scope for long range reconnaissance, hand-held as a Night Observation Device (NOD), or used in other night-time operations requiring night vision capabilities. Optimized for medium- & long-range sniper weapons including the SR-25 / MK11, XM107, .338 Lapua, .308 M24, Chandler & 300 Win Mag. Effective on all weapons from carbines to .50 caliber semi-automatic and bolt action sniper rifles. Preventing Vehicle Theft

Situation:

A suburban city department was experiencing an increase in burglaries and car thefts in the area, with the majority of these crimes occurring at night. The police stepped up their investigations and put more officers on the street for routine patrols at night in the targeted neighborhoods and areas.

Situation:

Responding to the communitys request for more frequent patrols, the local police department added more officers to the graveyard shift to patrol the areas hardest hit by the rise in crime. However, they needed a way to overcome the criminals advantage of hiding in the cover of darkness.

Burglars and car thieves easily went undetected by simply sneaking through the thick brush, shrubs and trees of the neighborhood. Darkness provided an advantage the officers simply couldnt overcome.

Solution:

Realizing a need to even the playing field at night, the department invested in a number of thermal imaging cameras. A number of the Thermal-Eye 5000xp thermal cameras were installed on police cruisers and provided the officers with the ability to see in complete darkness. During one of the nighttime patrols, a resident called and reported suspicious activity in the area. Officer approached the area with headlights off, but with the vehicle-mounted thermal camera on. The officers scanned the area with the 360 degree pan and tilt view offered by the camera. Farther down the street, they noticed a few hotspots or objects giving off heat in the environment. They realized it appeared to be three people crouching around a parked vehicle. The officers then slowly crept down the street, continuing to monitor the vehicle and surrounding areas. Since the camera created no light, they approached in a complete stealth mode. A few hundred feet from the vehicle, the officers confirmed their suspicions; three men were trying to steal the vehicle. The car thieves still were not aware they were being watched. The officers radioed for backup and boxed in the suspects. Officers successfully foiled the car thieves plan to steal the vehicle in the dead of night.

Fugitive Search in Heavily Wooded Area

Situation:

Officers really band together when one of their own is put in harms way. This was the case when a local law enforcement officer was assaulted on a routine traffic stop late one night. After refusing to cooperate with the officer, the male suspect assaulted the officer then both he and his girlfriend fled in their vehicle from the scene at high speed. After reporting the incident on the radio, the injured officer was taken to the hospital as other officers immediately began the chase to locate the suspects.

Need:

A large number of officers on shift that night were involved in the chase to locate the couple wanted for aggravated assault of an officer. The officers search had proven fruitless for more than two hours. The couple last had been seen jumping from their car and running into the wooded area where it might have been impossible to locate anyone, especially in the dark of night.

Solution:

Officers were determined to find the couple, but after a few hours, they considered giving up the search. Most searches were usually abandoned after 2-3 hours, especially when the search was at night in such poor lighting. One officer remembered that they had recently purchased a thermal imaging camera, so he gave it one last try by scanning the area on foot, with the Thermal-Eye X200xp thermal imaging camera in hand. Immediately he noticed a hotspot at the base of some trees off the main road. He monitored the hotspot from a safe distance for a minute, trying to make out whether it was a person or not. Suddenly, the spot moved, and he realized it was, in fact, both suspects laying down and picking up their heads to look around as they hid in the thick brush. They didnt even realize they were being watched and figured they had gotten away. The officer called for backup, and the couple was arrested and subsequently prosecuted.

Fugitive Search

Situation:

Local police officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident that had occurred on railroad tracks. Two vehicles were involved. An off-duty constable was the first on the scene. As he approached, neither party appeared seriously injured and both were conscious. Suddenly, upon seeing the constable, the driver of the larger vehicle jumped out of his car and fled from his wrecked vehicle on foot. He ran into a heavily wooded area near the tracks. The constable pursued the driver, but quickly lost him in the thick brush of the forest. The constable did not know if he was pursuing a possible criminal or just a disoriented driver.

Need:

The situation turned out to be a hit-and-run by an intoxicated driver. Additional police arrived on scene to investigate the accident and assist the constable. Officers were still investigating and cleaning up when they saw the intoxicated suspect reappear from the edge of the woods. The deputy in charge gave chase on foot in the black of night. He could not see in the dark through the thick brush where the suspect was likely hiding.

Solution:

Another officer arrived on scene to assist with the search. Fortunately, the officer had a Thermal-Eye X200xp thermal imaging camera. He immediately used the camera to survey the initial area where the suspect had fled into the woods. Within three minutes, the officer spotted the suspect hiding next to a tree 50 feet away. Since the Thermal-Eye X200xp emits no light, the suspect didnt realize he was being watched. As the officers approached to subdue him, the suspect put up a struggle and got free. Once again a chase ensued, but the officer using the thermal imager could see exactly where the suspect was heading. The officer could see better than the suspect; shortly after fleeing again, the suspect ran into a tree head-on and fell to the ground. Officers then were able to take him into custody safely.

Public Transportation Case Study

Situation:

Worldwide public transportation, particularly rail, commuter and subway transit, has become increasingly vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Now a primary focus of governments is to protect the innocent who rely on the transportation system for their daily routines from encountering any type of violence or interference.

Need:

One country, whose population relies upon the rail system for daily commutes, identifies its primary surveillance needs as:

· Monitoring 40 km (25 miles) of railway to prevent acts of violence on a major commuter line

· Detecting if trespassers or wildlife are on the tracks

· Providing the ability to automatically react from a central control room and notify individual trains of interference

Solution:

The country initially chose to implement 230 thermal cameras and quickly realized the value it was receiving from the cameras. Over a three-year period it implemented nearly 800 thermal cameras for one line. It chose the thermal camera solution because of the long detection range and the ability to detect activities 24 X 7.

The thermal cameras were focused down the railway, facing parallel to the tracks at 200-300 meters (600-900 feet) separation. They used a variety of lenses to adapt to each individual position, creating the most effective view of the rail for every camera. The cameras were then integrated with an automatic detection system and monitored from a central control room.

Thermal Imaging Disaster Relief

Situation:
The year 2005 was horrible for natural disasters around the world. The number of destructive hurricanes to hit the United States, especially the East Coast and Gulf Coast was tragic. Not only were lives lost and property damaged, but public safety officicals were put to the test, working long hours and trying to negate looting and other criminal activity in hurricane-ravaged areas.

Need:
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans area, the Lousiana State Police had already kicked into action, preparing SWAT teams to patrol and safeguard the area. Lt. Duane Schexnayder's SWAT team's initial response was to curb looting and protect the search and rescue teams that were going to locate and save victims.

Solution:
Faced with unique challenges due to the Hurricane, Lt. Schexnayder immediately put his Thermal-Eye X100xp thermal imaging camera to good use. Working often by candlelight and with no communications or power, his team had to rely on these thermal imagers to provide the benefit of sight in the dark. Feeding off of tips and intelligence from the local PD, the SWAT teams went into affected areas to patrol for looting. These blackout patrols utilized the Thermal-Eye X100xp to go undetected so they could monitor pick up threats in the area at night. The SWAT team also utilized traditional night vision equipment to complement the thermal imaging technology.

Besides detected possible looters and other criminal activity, the cameras helped improve officer safety. Officers could have more information on the environment around them, while remaining covert. As the city began to re-populate, thermal imaging helped officers discern between the good guys and the bad guys.

In one instance, the SWAT team was notified of shots fired in an area near an oil company. They arrived on the scene and set up a perimeter to secure the area. They heard it again, another shot. Using the X100xp thermal camera, they scanned the dark area and noticed something hot, and it wasn't a person. It turned out to be a propane device used to distract birds from the area, and it made a sound like a shotgun. The SWAT team was able to quickly identify the bird distraction device and return the patrol again. The X100xp helped them get back to more pressing duties.

Results:
Thermal imaging provided an important capability, the power of sight. It was a critical tool in a disaster environment where civic infrastructure, like electricity was compromised.

The X100xp cameras allowed state and local law enforcement to re-assert control and maintain order.

The cameras provided officers more information on the environment and helped them make better decisions, overall improving officer safety while successfully achieving their mission.

MV-14BG Dual Tube Night Vision Goggle. The MV-14BG utilizes two high performance, U.S. Made, ITT Generation 3 (64-72 lp/mm) image intensifier tubes to provide extremely clear and crisp images under the darkest conditions. Utilizing the most advanced Mil. Spec. housing, this system is built to handle the most demanding conditions. The dual tube binocular design offers greater performance than a single tube system improving depth perception when operating vehicles and / or heavy equipment at night.

Like it's cousin the, MV-14B, the MV-14BG can be hand held, or attached to a standard PVS-7/14 head mount or helmet mount. In addition, the MV-14BG can be easily detached from the dual bridge assembly to create two separate night vision monoculars that can be weapons, camera and/or video adapted.

Extremely light weight, the MV-14BG is fully submersible to a depth of 66 feet (20 Meters) and operates with either a single AA or 3.5 volt lithium battery for greater flexibility and longer battery life. The integrated IR illuminator allows the user to read maps and operate in pitch black conditions.

The MV-14BG is basically two (2) MV-14 Ultra Night Vision Monoculars combined by a high-tech bridge/adapter piece that allows for not only diopter adjustments, but helmet and head-mount adaptation.

Morovision Night Vision introduces the Boresighted Night Sight - an easy reliable night vision weapons sighting system.

The Boresighted Night Sight (BNS) may be the most reliable and easiest to use night vision weaponsighting system ever fielded. Like the Universal Night Sight, the BNS also incorporates gain control, which allows the user to lower the tube brightness (gain) to compensate for overly bright conditions or to increase the gain under extreme dark conditions.

The BNS is a unique night vision system that is small enough to mount in front of any boresighted daytime scope. Scope magnification can range from one to twelve power. The BNS does not require any boresighting and once mounted the daysight provides the aiming point. The BNS maintains boresight despite normal misalignments due to mount position errors and does not alter the sighting centerline (parallax is unchanged from dayscope). The BNS also contains no beam splitter or folded optics to go out of alignment.

The BNS is revolutionary when used with a high magnification fixed or variable power dayscope. The magnification is provided by the dayscope, which typically has much smaller optics than those associated with normal 4X or 6X night vision weaponsights. This means there is no loss in system gain or typical f/number loss associated with large optics. Variable magnification dayscopes can actually zoom in (up to 12X) and still retain the same gain (image brightness) with only a slight loss in resolution.

Thermal-Eye 5000xp Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera

The Thermal-Eye 5000xp Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera is the newest addition to the Thermal-Eye family of infrared thermal imaging systems from L-3 CIP. Similar to the 4000M, the 5000xp has additional design accommodations to withstand the harsher environments of marine applications. The 5000xp system is composed of the Pan/Tilt Camera, the Electronics Module, the Handcontroller, and four 25 interconnect cables.

The Pan/Tilt Camera contains the infrared sensor and conversion electronics which sends signal information of the infrared scene to the Electronics Module for further processing. The captured infrared scene, now converted to a real-time black/white signal, is sent to the Video Monitor or recorder, thru two available output ports on the Electronics Module.

Pan/Tilt command signals are received from the Handcontroller, processed thru the Electronics Module , and sent to control the left/right (pan) or up/down (tilt) positioning of the Pan/Tilt Camera. The Pan/Tilt Camera can be panned continuously a full 360 degrees and tilted down, or up to a full-closed position. HOME and STOW positions are built in upon turn-on/turn-off for user convenience and protection of the camera. Current pan position is displayed in the lower left corner of the video in a clock-type format.

DC power is supplied thru the red/black Power Cable to the system at the 2-pin power input on the Electronics Module. The 9-pin Handcontroller Cable, the 25-pin System Cable, and the Video Cables pass signal information between the system components. Fuse protection is also provided.

Infrared Imaging and Applications:

Visible light, the rainbow of colors that can be sensed by the human eye, is electromagnetic radiation within a certain frequency band. Infra- means below and red is the lowest frequency in the visible spectrum. Hence, infrared (orIR) refers to that range of electromagnetic wavelengths just below that capable of sight by the human eye. In the IR range, energy from a scene is not sensed by sight (light) but rather by temperature.

Most objects that you see are not radiating visible light but instead, are reflecting light radiated from another source. Most objects have to heated to extreme temperatures before they can radiate energy in the visible light spectrum. However, energy in the infrared range is being radiated by all objects that are above absolute zero(-459F). Hence, everything has a thermal signature, regardless of light conditions.

The Thermal-Eye 5000xp infrared detecting system distinguishes between very small differences in thermal (infrared) radiation, converts it to electric signals, amplifies those differences, and reproduces them correspondingly in the visible light (video) range. Powerful advantages are achieved in being able to turn a pitch black night into a black and white TV image of the scene. As your infrared knowledge and experience grows, further applications will develop as you recognize heat clues beyond the naked eye in both day and night conditions.

Safety Uses:

See without being seen. Thermal-Eye 5000xp allows for stealth surveillance and approach with the safety of a vehicle.

Element of surprise gives better situational control. Reduces opportunity for suspect flight and high speed chases.

Night viewing by sight requires flashlights and searchlights which reveals the pursuers position, giving advantage to the suspect who wants to stay hidden or surprise attack. Infrared viewing allows safer search capability while the suspect remains in the dark.

In search and rescue, seconds count. Missing or injured persons can be located before lengthy search deployments are required.

Docks, piers, boats, and other obstacles can all present dangerous hazards to marine navigation especially at night or in fog. With the Thermal-Eye 5000xp, these objects are clearly visible against the uniform temperature of the surrounding water.

Infrared does not bloom when hit with a bright light, such as headlights.

Efficiency Uses:

Wide areas can be scanned with the Thermal-Eye 5000xp to clear an area, establish a perimeter or quickly locate a missing person or man-overboard.

An area can be brought under control in less time.

Manpower and equipment resouces are saved by reducing the need for foot patrol, K-9, helicopter, and flashlight expenses.

Warmth on a cars engine compartment or tires yields evidence of when it was last driven.

While light reflects off of foliage, infrared from a person behind a bush is radiated through the foliage, allowing better detection in both day and night conditions.

Infrared reflects off of windows, metal structures, smooth concrete walls, and other opaque surfaces providing a mirroring ability around corners in day or night.

Our new 10x magnifier is a great fit for our customers who need a highly magnified night vision monocular or goggle but do not wish to spend $500-1000 on a MilSpec magnifier. The 10x has its own manual focus and can be used during the day as a very effective magnifying spotting scope. Market this unit towards the informed/educated retail buyer who is looking at various accessories for their Generation 3 goggle/monocular.

I evaluated the unit on a full moon night with clear skies and it performed very well although focusing the unit is difficult to get used to. Once the 10x is attached to the goggle/monocular you now have three points to focus, the eye relief, the objective lens focus and the manual focus on the 10x. Once all three are adjusted correctly the 10x magnifier will provide you with clear/sharp images up to 1000 yards away. The magnifier does reduce the field of view from the monocular/goggle by approximately 5-10%. I found the 10x to be very effective for long range surveillance and it functioned well as a day time hand held spotting scope. Included with the unit is a soft carrying case with belt loop as well as a lanyard that can be attached to the magnifier. For an agency in need of a low priced alternative to the military magnifiers the 10x is a great solution. Major selling points will be the versatility of day and night use as well as the low price point.

The single hole night vision system adapter plate allows the user to install the plate in the front the helmet, like a traditional PASGT type helmet. The plate also has strap fittings in case the user wants a more secure fit for the night vision device mounted to the helmet. The straps resemble the popular PASGT helmet assembly. Once installed the user can easily slide and snap in the PASGT type helmet mount into the plate and subsequently attach the night vision device of his or her choice. Typically, that's a goggle or monocular system. This new system is an alternative option for MICH helmet users, who can also use a helmet shroud ( much like the single hole plate, except that the shroud screws into the helmet via three holes and is much less likely to require a strap for a more secure night vision equipment attachment to the helmet ) and conversion plate, but which is also a bit more expensive as a result. Either way, using night vision equipment with a MICH helmet is easier, quicker and less of a hassle than it used to be with two options to choose from.

Before 9/11, the night vision industry was seeking to expand its consumer markets. The ITT Night Mariner 160 was targeted towards the boating industry. There was, and still is, and will continue to be, a real need for quality night vision aimed for use by the marine industry.

However, after 9/11, night vision image tube manufacturers, like ITT, focused their energies on supplying the military and law enforcement markets, and the consumer market was suspended and has since been suspended indefinitely.
